What is a cathedra?

The cathedra is the chair of the bishop. The diocesan church of bishop or an archbishop is called a cathedral because it houses his episcopal chair (cathedra).

Additionally, following the First Vatican Council (1869-1870) the phrase ex cathedra, meaning "from the chair," came to signify the highest level of papal teaching. Theologians have since emphasized that a papal teaching cannot be ex cathedra unless it is 1. universal 2. supreme 3. definitive and 4. mandatory. Requiring these four qualifications before a papal teaching can be considered ex cathedra has made this type of teaching infrequent.

Beginning in 1858, the Virgin Mary appeared St. Bernadette Soubirous numerous times. St. Bernadette was only 14 years old the first time Mary appeared to her. Mary revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception, asked St. Bernadette to build a chapel, and told her to drink from a fountain in the grotto.

There was not a visible fountain, but when Bernadette dug in the designated spot, a spring began to flow. Water from this spring has demonstrated remarkable healing power, though it contains no curative property that identifiable by man.

What feast day is celebrated on December 12?

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe was raised to the status of a feast in all United States' dioceses in 1988. In 1910 she was declared the patroness of Latin America and in 1946 Pope Pius XII declared he to be the patroness of all the Americas.

On December 12, 1531, the Blessed Virgin appeared at Tepeyac, Mexico, to Juan Diego and requested that a church building be constructed at the site. Juan Diego visited Bishop Juan de Zumárraga the local bishop and carried with him a cloak upon which an image of the Blessed Virgin was inexplicable imprinted. In 1533 the church was build and in 1555 a feast was established to honor the church's patroness, Our Lady of Guadalupe.
