Trivia Answer #11 - St. Peter Catholic Trivia Night

What are the seven "deadly" sins?

The seven deadly sins (capital sins) are anger, avarice, envy, gluttony, lust, pride and sloth. It is more accurate to think of the “seven” as dispositions toward sinning rather than sins themselves.

Capital sins were first talked of during the first centuries of Eastern monasticism when lists were made to alert monks of vices that would harm monastic life. Pope Gregory the Great (d. 604) modified the list of sins to a close resemblance of what they look like today; however, he cited eight, not seven. (Pride and vainglory were listed as two separate capital sins.) He then made the sins applicable to all Catholics, not just monks.

Thomas Aquinas (d. 1274) merged pride and vainglory and came up with the final list of the seven "deadly" sins we know today.

Fine Wine Collection

1999 Padrone Signorello Estate Bottles - Napa Valley - Red

Impressive for its structure, complexity, range of flavors and focus, with firm, ripe black fruits, dried currant, blackberry, black licorice, mocha and cedary graphite notes that tighten on the finish, when the fine-grained tannins take grip. Blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc.  94-WS, 94-RP

Value = $98

Fine Wine Collection

1996 Whitehall Lane Reserve Cab
93 points Wine Spectator: "Has a wonderful sense of harmony. Ripe, rich and deeply concentrated, with layers of juicy plum, black cherry, plum and spice, with a pretty toasty oak and blackberry aftertaste.

According to Robert Parker: "The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve reveals new oak (in addition to black currant fruit) as well as a tight framework. Closed and not very supple and evolved, this wine displays length and intensity at the back of the palate. It is a classy, well-made Napa Cabernet Sauvignon that should be better with 1-2 more years of bottle age, and last for 10-15 years." (01/2000)

Value = $80

Fine Wine Collection

1996 Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa  Valley CAB
According to Wine Spectator: "Intense, with minty currant and mocha flavors that are rich, tannic and concentrated. Youthful, yet the tannins are dense, earthy and chewy.

Value = $119

Trivia Answer #10 - St. Peter Catholic Trivia Night

Who is the patron saint of mothers?

Though we always honor Mary as the mother of Jesus and as our mother, according to the calendar of saints, St. Monica (circa 322-387 A.D.) is listed as the patron saint of mothers. She ministered to the poor, not only in North Africa (near Carthage), but also in Italy where she had journeyed to follow her son who we know as St. Augustine of Hippo today. (While St. Monica is the patron saint of all mothers, Sts. Gerard and Ann are the patron saints of expectant mothers.)
